The program distributes 85,000 visas annually to employees who work in \u201cspecialty occupations\u201d (including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biotechnology, architecture, engineering, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, law, accounting, and the arts, among others) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and who meet the requirements for the visa, which include a bachelor\u2019s degree or equivalent and a license to practice in the area, if necessary. Changes may be coming to the H-1B visa program, as the new Trump Administration has indicated it would like to introduce rules which \u201cprioritize\u201d certain applicants over others. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Possible Changes to the H-1B System<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a leaked memo <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/1\/25\/14390106\/leaked-drafts-trump-immigrants-executive-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obtained by the news site Vox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Trump administration reportedly is seeking to take steps which would:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritize \u201cthe interests of American workers\u201d over foreign workers;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit the ability of spouses of H-1B workers to receive visas;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRestore the integrity of employment-based nonimmigrant worker programs\u2026;\u201d and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsider ways\u201d to change the H-1B program to make it \u201cmore efficient and ensure that beneficiaries of the program are the best and brightest.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These points are no doubt vague in what they might mean for employers and employees going forward, but other leaked memos obtained by Vox relating to immigration turned out to be nearly word-for-word counterparts to actual executive orders issued by the Trump administration in its first week, and thus should be taken seriously.
