NHTSA also publishes the causes of fatal accidents.\u00a0 In 2016, the leading cause of fatal incidents was speeding, a factor in nearly 18 percent of the crashes.\u00a0\u00a0Driving under the influence was a distant second at about 11 percent.\u00a0 Data also show that the younger the driver, the higher the crash rate.\u00a0 Though most crashes occur in urban areas, driving in rural areas is actually more dangerous.\u00a0 Urban centers have more vehicles and more crashes, but rural areas have a higher incident rate of fatal accidents per resident.<\/p>\n
