Bicycle helmets that boast multi-directional impact protection systems, or MIPS, offered the best protection.\u00a0 MIPS creates a protective low-friction layer inside the helmet, leading to increased levels of safety.\u00a0 In fact, the only helmets to receive a 5-star safety rating were helmets equipped with MIPS.\u00a0 Those helmets are the Bontrager Ballista MIPS, Garneau Raid MIPS, Bell Stratus MIPS, and Specialized Chamonix MIPS.<\/p>\n
Helmets were tested using sensors monitoring six commonly impacted locations during bicycle crashes.\u00a0 The helmets were tested in simulated bicycle crashes at two different speeds to determine how well each helmet would protect a wearer from a concussion.\u00a0 Two helmet models, the Lazer Genesis and the Bern Watts, received a 2-star safety rating, or adequate.<\/p>\n
