Injury Rates in Amazon Warehouses High, Climbing According to Leaked Data

Work Injury

A whistleblower has leaked several years’ worth of injury data from the U.S. warehouses of online retail giant Amazon to the investigative reporting podcast Reveal.  The data show interesting information about worker injuries that are typically withheld by major companies.  For Amazon specifically, serious warehouse worker injuries are on the rise every year and are nearly twice as frequent than industry standard.  The data appear to show that 78 percent of Amazon warehouses have a serious injury rate higher than the industry average, serious injury being described as an injury that results in missed work or modified job duties.

According to the data, injuries occurred more frequently during high volume times and at warehouses that used robots.  Amazon has previously stated that injury rates do not actually increase during high volume periods, but the data show that the weeks with the most injuries in 2019 happened to include Prime Day and Cyber Monday.  One of the least safe warehouses is a warehouse that distributes large items in Eastvale, CA (LGB3), which reported that almost 1 in every 5 workers suffered a serious injury in 2018 and 2019, nearly five times the industry standard.

In a separate news story, Amazon confirmed that almost 20,000 of its employees have contracted Covid-19, highlighting other potential risks to its workforce.  Amazon has previously received negative attention for the stresses it places on its workforce, including poor working conditions, high productivity demands, lack of bathroom breaks, and high injury rates, even before the pandemic hit.  The company claims it is seeing improvements in preventing and reducing worker injuries.

Even if the company brings serious injury levels down to industry standard, many workers will continue to be hurt.  Injured workers in California can pursue medical treatment and disability benefits through the workers’ compensation program.  The Law Offices of Scott Warmuth provides legal assistance to injured workers, helping them navigate the notoriously complicated work injury claim process, providing a no recovery, no fee guarantee.  We offer 100 percent free consultations, so call us today at 888-517-9888!
