Happy Lunar New Year!

The year of the rat, is upon us!  While typically portrayed as a pest in America, in Chinese culture, the rat is seen as a sign of intelligence, wealth, and fertility.  It is said that when determining the order of the zodiac, the rat tricked the ox into carrying it, jumping off the ox at the end of the procession to become the first animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Colleges and Universities Step Up to Defend OPT

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program is a very popular initiative that allows international students the opportunity to work in the United States after graduation.  A lawsuit brought by the labor union Washington Alliance of Technology Workers seeks to end OPT by arguing that the program flouts immigration laws.  OPT or similar programs allowing international students to temporarily work in the U.S. have been around for decades and is currently managed by the Department of Homeland Security.

America's Best Drivers Are Not from SoCal

Insurance company Allstate has released its America's Best Drivers Report® for 2019.  The report ranks the 200 largest cities in the United States on their driving safety, measured by the average number of years between insurance claims.  42 of the largest 200 cities are in California.  None of the cities in California are better than the national average of 10.57 years between claims.  Los Angeles is near the bottom of the pack, ranked 195th.

Calculating SSDI Benefits

Many people who apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are unsure of how much compensation they would receive should their application be approved.  Unlike personal injury claims or work injury benefits, the severity of an injury does not play a role in determining SSDI benefits.  SSDI benefits are determined instead by calculating applicants' average indexed monthly earnings and running that amount through a predetermined mathematical formula.
