[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]New reports have surfaced that if Congress is unable to act legislation protecting so-called Dreamers, President Trump may extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program past it's current March 5th expiration. It is unknown how long that extension would be, if there would be an additional period to renew DACA permits, if legal challenges to the program would resume, or how likely an extension is to occur. The deadline to renew DACA permits for an additional two years passed on October 5th.
The speculation about the March 5th deadline not being a true deadline started with a tweet last month, but interest was renewed last night when Oklahoma Senator James Lankford made comments about the program after a town hall meeting. According to reports, Lankford and Trump discussed the program last month on a phone call.
Dreamers are young immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children. In order to be eligible for DACA, applicants needed to have continuously lived in the United States for at least five years, received an education, and remained out of serious legal trouble. DACA allowed these undocumented immigrants to legally live and work in the United States. It is estimated that about 690,000 currently have DACA permits.
