[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Have you ever purchased a bicycle helmet? Did you consider that the helmet you were purchasing may not have offered the best protection? The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety created safety ratings for 30 different models of bicycle helmet. It turns out that some bike helmets offer better protection than others.
Bicycle helmets that boast multi-directional impact protection systems, or MIPS, offered the best protection. MIPS creates a protective low-friction layer inside the helmet, leading to increased levels of safety. In fact, the only helmets to receive a 5-star safety rating were helmets equipped with MIPS. Those helmets are the Bontrager Ballista MIPS, Garneau Raid MIPS, Bell Stratus MIPS, and Specialized Chamonix MIPS.
Helmets were tested using sensors monitoring six commonly impacted locations during bicycle crashes. The helmets were tested in simulated bicycle crashes at two different speeds to determine how well each helmet would protect a wearer from a concussion. Two helmet models, the Lazer Genesis and the Bern Watts, received a 2-star safety rating, or adequate.
