The proposed rule changes the definition of public charge to include more popular forms of government assistance, including Medicaid and SNAP benefits. Any immigrant who has ever used these programs could face a more difficult path to obtaining a green card. Even without the new rule in place, the Trump Administration has used the existing public charge rule to deny thousands of visa applications.
