[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Bayer AG, owner of the biotech corporation Monsanto, was ordered to pay $2.055 billion to a California couple who both developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after decades of using the weedkiller Roundup on their properties. This is the third trial resulting in a jury verdict against Monsanto in California. Last August, a jury awarded $289 million to a 46-year-old terminally ill groundskeeper, and earlier this year, another jury awarded $80 million to a 70-year-old homeowner. Bayer is appealing the first two verdicts and will likely appeal the newest verdict as well. Thousands of similar lawsuits are pending.
Monsanto continues to insist that Roundup is safe. Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, is the most popular herbicide in the world. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) ruled that glyphosate was likely a carcinogen to humans. This February, the University of Washington published a meta-analysis study showing that people exposed to glyphosate saw a 41 percent increased risk of developing non Hodgkin's lymphoma. Internal Monsanto documents released during the trials show a concerted effort to downplay damaging scientific studies, publicize favorable studies, and to even author their own studies showing glyphosate is safe. Monsanto has yet to conduct any research as to whether or not Roundup is safe.
The first jury trial against Monsanto to take place outside of California will occur in St. Louis this August. Another 10 trials are expected to occur over the next couple of years.
